Welcome
Welcome to the South Montgomery County Friends of the Library (SMCFOL) website. We are a non-profit organization that supports the South Regional and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Branches of the Montgomery County Library System. Our contributions allow the libraries to offer programs and resources beyond what the county budget covers.
The Friends of the Library has subsidized programs such as book clubs for tots, tweens, teens and seniors, job fairs, family game nights, dancing, knitting, and Library Lite, a health & wellnes program. The SMCFOL also contributes money to purchase books and other media, supplies and equipment not afforded by the annual budgets. The exceptional staff conceives programs that make the libraries centers for fun and education for the entire community. The Friends assist them in implementing those plans.
Additionally, Friends of the Library contribute man hours in assisting the libraries; they may help decorate for holidays or celebrations, supply refreshments for special events, stamp due-date cards, shelve books, notify people when reserved books have arrived, etc.
The SMCFOL generates revenue through biannual book sales and the proceeds from the two Friends Rooms (the book shops located at the library branches). Membership dues and contributions are additional sources of revenue.
Refer to our schedule of events to see when our next meeting or book sale will be. The general meetings typically have entertaining and informative programs as well as tempting refreshments. For example, the January program offered a brief history of dulcimers and a rousing demonstration of the variety of music they can provide.
Be sure you stop in and explore the Friends Room the next time you are in your neighborhood library. Most paperbacks are 50 cents and most hardcovers are $2.00. The supply of fairly current magazines, videos, DVDs, and audio books are also popular and well-priced. New material arrives daily, so come often.
It’s great being a Friend! We’d love to include you, so if you are interested in joining the Friends of the Library, just download and print the form or pick one up at the Friends Room.
